Table Mountain / Signal Hill (Weather permitting) Green Market Square Cape Malay Quarters, Bo-Kaap Castle of Good HopeThis half-day tour of Cape Town will teach you more about the Mother City and take you to places of interest including the Castle of Good Hope, Table Mountain, the Bo-Kaap and Green Market Square. In 1652 Jan van Riebeeck arrived in the Cape of Good Hope. He had been sent by the Dutch East India Company to establish a stopping point where ships en-route to the East could safely restock their supplies of fresh food, water and wine. A few years later construction started on the pentagonal Castle of Good Hope, now South Africa’s oldest surviving building and a military museum. The beautiful city of Cape Town is set against the backdrop of Table Mountain. Once a shelter to primitive man and beacon to sailors, this magnificent mountain has become the most visited site in Africa after the great pyramids of Egypt. In the mountain’s shadow lies a city of cultural contrasts. A rich part of this fascinating diversity is the cobbled streets, bright buildings and beautiful mosques of Bo-Kaap, home to the Cape Malay community. This complex community is the descendents of slaves from Java, Bali, Indonesia and Malaysia. A visit to the Bo-Kaap Museum will give you a glimpse back in time, to a typical Malay family of the 19th century. At the heart of the city is Green Market Square. Originally a place where farmers would come to voice complaints, meet a friend or sell their vegetable; the square is now a bustling craft market. |
